Kudzu removal starts with cutting the vine back to bare ground. Three Crosses Land Services clears kudzu, privet, honeysuckle, wisteria, briars and other invasive growth around Chattanooga. The work happens on overgrown lots, wooded edges, creek banks and grown up fence lines. Estimates are free.
Kudzu came to this country at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. The Soil Conservation Service and the CCC later planted it along new roads to stop soil from washing. It stayed. The area gets about 55 inches of rain a year, and kudzu can grow over a foot a day.
We work about 40 miles out from our base just north of Chattanooga. That takes in Hixson, Soddy-Daisy, Signal Mountain, Ooltewah, Cleveland, and Ringgold and Fort Oglethorpe in Georgia. Three Crosses Land Services is a veteran-owned family business, licensed and insured. When the vines have taken a whole lot, our residential land clearing page covers the bigger job.

We take the standing growth and everything the vines have climbed. Kudzu, privet, honeysuckle, wisteria and briars come down to bare ground. The drum mulcher grinds privet stems and the underbrush beneath them into chips. The rotary cutter runs through vine mats and briars on open ground.
Privet is the thicket and kudzu is the blanket, and plenty of ground around here carries both. Privets came over in the 1800s as hedge plants and got loose. Tennessee's agriculture department describes them as shrubs 8 to 20 feet tall with multiple stems. They form dense thickets that shade out the native shrubs under them.
Vines get pulled off fences and off small trees where that can be done without damage. The mini skid steer fits through a standard fence gate, so back corners and tight lots stay reachable. Chips stay on the ground as a mulch layer. If you want the material gone, we haul the cut material off on the dump trailer.
A property line grown shut with privet is fence line and easement clearing. We price that on the same visit. Trees standing against a house or a shed are not our lane. That work belongs to a tree service.
Some of it will. Kudzu regrows from the root crowns sitting at the base of each vine. Cutting and mulching knocks the blanket down and opens the ground so those crowns can be found. Repeated cutting over seasons is what wears the plant down.
A crown cut below the soil and lifted out is done. Kudzu does not sprout from lateral roots, so the crowns are the whole fight. Alabama Extension puts mowing-only control at many years of weekly summer cutting. The USDA says herbicide eradication typically takes about 10 years of persistent applications.
Our side of this is mechanical. We cut the growth to the ground and mulch it in place. That leaves the site open, with the crowns where a shovel can reach them. Herbicide work is a licensed applicator's job.
Most patches take more than one visit. A cut in late winter or early spring opens the site before the vines run again. A summer cut stops the climb before it reaches fences, trees and wires. On open ground, keeping the regrowth knocked down between visits is bush hogging work.
Size sets most of it. The price follows how much ground the vines cover, or how many feet of line we open. Then comes how thick and how tall the growth is. Trees you want saved inside the patch slow the machine down.
Access is next. How close the machine can get to the patch changes the day, and so does a slope or soft ground. What happens to the cut material also moves the number. Chips left on the ground cost less than loads hauled out.
We come look at the patch, and the estimate is free. Photos help if the growth is behind a gate or down a bank. (423) 260-5675From the first call or text to the finished property, here is how it goes.
Reach us at (423) 260-5675 with what you need done and where the property sits. Photos of the growth help us size up the job.
We come out, look at the growth and how equipment gets in, then give you a price. The number tracks how thick the growth is and how much ground it covers.
You approve the price and we put the job on the schedule. We confirm the day ahead of time so you know when the machine is coming.
The mini skid steer comes in through the gate and the mulcher goes over the growth. Bigger stems come down first, then get ground into chips.
The chips get spread level across the cleared ground. What is left is open space you can mow, fence, or use for whatever comes next.
